When registering, every student pays two fees in addition to their tuition fees: a Students' Associations Fee and an Activity Fee. The Activity Fee is NOT collected by the Students' Union but instead by the University. Students' Associations Fees are collected by the Students' Union on behalf of itself and several other organisations to which all students belong.

To ensure that dues are effectively managed, the Students' Union participates in an annual financial review process, which is the same the same process the University is required to complete for the BC Government to ensure that it remains financially accountable.

Every year an external accounting firm conducts an audit of the Students' Union's bookkeeping and financial procedures to ensure that no mismanagement has occurred and that the Students’ Union’s finances are transparent. Once complete, the audit is presented to Students' Union members at the annual general meeting and made available in the Students' Union office. The attached document compares fees charged by students' unions at rural universities in BC. Notice that the fees charged by our Students' Union are lower than those charged by similar student societies. One note about how the numbers for VIU are presented: the fee data used represents charges for a student at the Nanaimo campus and fees for regional campus students are lower.
